Most riddles labelled hard are just obscure. A genuinely hard riddle is different: it hands you everything you need, and you still miss it, because one word is quietly carrying two meanings and you only heard one of them.
These hard riddles are ordered by difficulty, from ten that will take you a minute to a final section that has defeated people for decades. Under the harder ones you will find a short note explaining exactly where the trap was set.

Two answers, depending on what you mean.
The academic answer is a logic puzzle formally named the Hardest Logic Puzzle Ever. The logician George Boolos gave it that title when he published it in The Harvard Review of Philosophy in 1996, crediting Raymond Smullyan as its originator and the computer scientist John McCarthy with adding the cruellest part.
The puzzle: Three gods, A, B and C, are called True, False and Random, in some order. True always answers truthfully, False always answers falsely, and Random answers truthfully or falsely at random. Work out which god is which by asking three yes or no questions, each put to exactly one god. The gods understand English but answer in their own language, where the words for yes and no are “da” and “ja”, and you do not know which means which.
Answer: It is solvable, and the key is the embedded conditional. Instead of asking a god a plain question, you ask a question of the form “Does ‘da’ mean yes if and only if X?” That construction returns the same word whether you are talking to True or False, and whether or not you know what “da” means, because the two unknowns cancel out. Use question one to find a god who is definitely not Random, then use the remaining two on that god.
The popular answer is much shorter and gets asked far more often.
What is greater than God, more evil than the devil, the poor have it, the rich need it, and if you eat it you will die?
Answer: Nothing.
It reads like a theology question, which is the whole trick. Every clause is literally true of nothing, and the reason people fail is that they search for a noun instead of accepting the absence of one.

Four habits that work on almost everything above.
Hard riddles rarely hide information. They rely on one term carrying an ordinary meaning and a second, less obvious one. Single, take, all but, spell, stories, branches. When you are stuck, list the nouns and ask which could mean something else.
Number nineteen catches people because they hear “each daughter has a brother” and multiply. Number fourteen catches people because “all but nine” already gives the answer. Arithmetic is almost never the difficulty.
Nothing in number thirty says the surgeon is a man. Nothing in number twenty nine rules out the North Pole. The riddle did not add the constraint. You did.
A surprising number of hard riddles are built on how a phrase sounds rather than how it reads, and hearing it breaks the spell.
